Geisha (芸者) (/ ˈ ɡ eɪ ʃ ə /; Japanese:), geiko (芸子), or geigi (芸妓) are Japanese women who entertain through performing the ancient traditions of art, dance and singing, and are distinctively characterized by their wearing of kimono and oshiroi makeup.. Contrary to popular belief, geisha are not the Eastern equivalent of a prostitute; a misconception originating in the West.

Geisha makeup is rooted in a long tradition of Japanese history and culture we can only begin to scratch the surface on. For us Westerners, we can learn more about the application and use of this genre of makeup, and discover that it is much more than just a Halloween costume.
